Some basic Info About Hibiscus and its syrup
Hibiscus is a beautiful flower native to Asia and the Pacific Islands. These flowers thrive in tropical and semi-tropical regions. In some places, hibiscus is also known as Jamaican Sorrel. The Jamaican name for the hibiscus flower is Roselle. These flowers are often dried and used to make tea, which can be enjoyed as hot or refreshing iced tea.
Hibiscus can usually be found in health grocery stores and online on Amazon. We bought a big bag of dried petals from Amazon, which will be kept for a long time if stored in an air-tight container. If you grow hibiscus, you can also make the syrup with fresh whole flowers at home but plan to make this recipe.
Hibiscus syrup is a sweet syrup made by using the petals of the dried hibiscus flower. It adds a floral and colorful element to the drink, making it more visually appealing. Store-bought hibiscus syrup contains artificial coloring, but you can easily make hibiscus syrup at home with only two ingredients.
It tastes floral and citrusy, with a delicate sweet-tart flavor.
Once the petals are strained, we store them in a mason jar. It stays well in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.
