Sweet Potatoes are always hit in our house.
When we were in India, we used to eat sweet potatoes, cooked in a traditional pressure cooker, every day during this time of the year.
And here in the US also, I make sure to use sweet potatoes at least 3 times a week – in soups, curry or steamed.
Sweet potatoes are power-packed food. It is packed with fiber. It is good for eyes, anti-aging and anti-cancer, is heart-healthy and is energy-rich.
We love cooking the sweet potato in our Instant Pot.
It’s a completely hands-off process and sweet potatoes come out perfect every single time.
The texture is perfect, fluffy and tender. Also, the best thing is it just takes less than 30 minutes which is incredible during busy days.
Believe me, Sweet potatoes in Instant pot are a very convenient and simple method!
How do you make/cook sweet potatoes in the instant pot?
This recipe is super easy. You only need 2 ingredients.
- Sweet Potatoes
- Water.
And also we highly recommend using a trivet or steam basket.
Step 1 – Rinse, scrub and Poke
Rinse the potatoes under cold water and give them a nice scrub. Then Poke a hole in them a few times with a fork.
Step 2 – Add water and trivet
Add a glass of water and place a trivet.
Step – 3 Cook
Place sweet potatoes on the trivet, cover the IP with its locking lid, vent valve on sealing position. and cook them. Let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes and after that quick release the remaining pressure.
That Simple!
How long does it take sweet potatoes to cook in the instant pot?
You should cook them at high pressure. Cooking time depends on the size of the sweet potatoes. The smaller the sweet potatoes the lesser the cooking time.
Small size [around 6 to 8 Oz(200-225 grams)] – 18 minutes
Medium Size [10 to 12 OZ] – 25 minutes
Large Size – 35 minutes.
How to serve sweet potatoes?
1. Simply top it up with butter.
2. Load it up with Sour cream, tomatoes and green onions.
3. Make this cute little sweet potato casserole in orange cups for Thanksgiving.
- Take sweet potatoes. Peel and mash them.
- Add some agave (Optional), some milk or heavy cream and some butter. Mix well. Keep it aside.
- Now, Cut the orange in half. Use a sharp knife to cut in a circle around the inside of the orange.
- Scoop out the orange flesh leaving an orange bowl.
- Stuff those orange cups with mashed sweet potatoes.
- Add vegan Marshmallows on top.
- Take all the orange cups into a baking tray.
- Bake them in preheated oven @350 degrees F. For about 20 to 25 minutes.
- Cute little sweet potatoes orange cups with marshmallows are ready.
4. Turn it into mashed sweet potatoes for a healthy Thanksgiving side dish by adding some butter, cinnamon and nutmeg powder.
Pro tips and Notes –
- You can stack the sweet potatoes in Instant pot but careful. Don’t overcrowd the pot.
- Make sure the sweet potatoes don’t stay in the water, they will get mushy.
- Cooking time will vary depending on size.
- Make sure to poke a hole in the sweet potatoes with a fork before cooking to let the steam escape during cooking and prevent bursting.
- If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container. They will stay good for up to 5 days. Simply reheat in microwave before serving.
- Red Garnet and Jewel Works perfectly. It is moist, and It has a fluffy and creamy texture.
- Try to get sweet potatoes that are all about the same size.

Instructions

- Poke Holes with a fork. Place sweet potatoes on the trivet, cover the IP with its locking lid, vent valve on sealing position. Press the manual button and set the timer for 18 minutes under high pressure.
- Once cooking time is done, let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes and quick release the remaining pressure.
