Tips to make Best Mango Dal | Mamidikaya Pappu in Pressure cooker/Instant Pot.

  • Don’t use young mango. Always choose mature raw mango.
  • If you are making it in a traditional pressure cooker, cook toor dal with green chilies and mango pieces. It will bring out the flavors of mangoes very nicely.
  • Make this dal little bit spicier side.
  • Remove the skin of mangoes.
  • Make sure the raw mangos are not too sour. If it is way too sour, reduce the mango quantity.

Traditional Pressure cooker method.

In a traditional pressure cooker method, dal is cooked with Grated or diced mango and green chilies to bring out the most flavor from the raw mangos.

Take Washed toor dal, mango pieces and green chilies in a big bowl(should fit in a traditional Indian Pressure cooker). Add water and cover the bowl.

Add a glass of water in a pressure cooker, place a stand and place dal bowl on top. Cover the pressure cooker.

Take 4 to 5 whistles.

Let the pressure release naturally.

Open the lid.

Then prepare the tempering. Heat oil, add cumin seeds, curry leaves, garlic, ginger, green chilies, tomatoes, and onions. Saute for few seconds and add this tempering to the cooked dal mixture.

Add some water, according to preferred consistency.

Now add all the spices like salt, garam masala, turmeric powder, and chili powder.

Cook dal for 3 to 4 minutes over medium to high heat.

Stovetop Method.

If you don’t have Instant Pot or traditional Indian pressure cooker, you can still enjoy this simple dal recipe by making it on the stove top.

Take washed dal, mango and green chilies in a big pot, add enough water and cook them for about 20 to 25 minutes or until dal is tender, stirring occasionally. Make sure to check the water every now and then. Add some more water if needed.

Once it is cooked perfectly, follow the tempering steps as shown in the traditional pressure cooker method.

Enjoy it with jeera rice.

Notes

Select raw and firm mango.
You can also use mango pieces instead of grated mango.
First taste the mango. If it's too sour use less.
If you don't have toor dal on hand or don't want to use it, substitute it with red lentil/masoor dal or Moong dal.
For moong dal and Red lentil, in instant pot, cook for 6 minutes under high pressure.
You can use ghee instead of oil.
You may add black mustard seeds too along with cumin seeds.
If you couldn't find Thai green chilies, use any spicy green chili. Adjust the spice level according to your taste.
you can skip green chilies if making for small kids.
If you prefer very thick like curry consistency dal, use only 3 cups of water.
This vegan dal freezes well for about a month.
