Lariat Survivor: 1986 Ford F-150 XLT

While we’re all generally impressed by survivor-grade vehicles, it’s particularly impressive when the vehicle in question is fairly plane-jane. The logic here is that an ordinary vehicle is far more likely to be abused, or kept in average condition at best. So when you find a truck like this 1986 Ford F150 Lariat XLT, it’s a bit eye-opening to realize that it really is as nice as it looks. This long-bed pickup is relatively spotless and is listed here on craigslist for $11,294.

Once you get past the seemingly blemish-free exterior, you’ll notice a few things: one, there is a lot of brown on this truck. Inside and out, you better love the various shades of tan, woodgrain, dark brown, and regular brown if you’re to fully embrace the ownership of this truck. More importantly, though, is recognizing just how spectacular this cabin is. It’s in damn near mint condition, a testament to years’ of careful ownership. I only wish there wasn’t an ugly modern radio sticking out of the dash.

But the good news keeps on coming, especially as you move underneath this F150. This truck is spotless! It truly looks like it’s never seen moisture of any kind, and the condition you see here continues from end to end. The truck resides in Pittsburgh, which isn’t exactly known for being devoid of snow. To me, this is a grandpa-owned truck that stayed off the roads in the winter months and saw very little use the rest of the year. With under 90,000 miles, the Ford didn’t rack up that many miles year over year.

The paint under the hood and the engine bay detailing further reinforces just how clean this specimen is. A long-bed, 2WD F150 is not a particularly collectible specimen, but this one deserves every penny it can for being what is likely one of the best of its kind still in existence. With a 5.0L V8, automatic transmission, and no rust, this is a hobby vehicle you can get in and use without doing much to impact its value provided the condition remains as good as it appears to be here.

The XLT Lariat was a high-end truck in its day, kind of a precursor to today’s luxury pickups. This nice example sports lots of options: automatic, air, cruise, power windows and locks, cloth seats, upscale interior and exterior trim, whitewalls, wheel covers.

Being a 2WD long wheelbase it isn’t the choice for those who are into the jacked up/big tire look, but otherwise it looks great (even with the sea of browns). Different tastes for different folks; perhaps, kind of like why some people aren’t that interested in 60’s-70’s muscle cars but are interested in personal luxury coupes of the same era.

You’re exactly right – this is a well-equipped rig that would still be a lot of fun to own and drive.
