What is Golden Milk | Haldi Doodh?
In simple words, it is go-to immunity booster milk-based drink made with Turmeric and other warming spices like cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, and dry ginger powder.
It is a very popular age-old Ayurvedic drink.
One of the best drinks to keep away from illness and get a feel-good feeling.
My mom would make me drink it whenever I was under the weather or hurt myself. It has excellent healing properties.
To make this drink, the key ingredient is Turmeric.
As an Indian, I grew up eating turmeric every day of my life.
It’s one of those important spices without which you can’t cook Indian food.
It’s added to pretty much everything in India cuisine from Daal to Curries to pickles, Rice – you name it!
In fact, I don’t think we Indians can work without this spice in the kitchen. It adds a beautiful yellow hue to the dish.
My husband drinks this every day, especially in winter. So I keep the Golden milk powder mixture ready all the time.
I make it in bulk (Enough for a month) and store it in an airtight container at room temperature. It comes very handily.
Just mix the golden milk masala and sweetener of your choice in milk and bring it to a boil. The best and healthy drink is ready in just 5 minutes.

Ingredients required –
My Mom makes it with only 3 ingredients- milk, sugar, and turmeric. So she would stir milk and sugar with turmeric powder in a pot and bring it to a simmer. She doesn’t add any spices to it.
But now that I make it on my own, I add in a lot of spices.
For spice mix (Haldi doodh masala)
- Turmeric
Used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat the inflammation.
- Dry ginger powder
Ginger powder is widely used in the Indian kitchen to add flavor and aroma. It is also known as Sonth in Hindi, Sonti in Telugu and Soonth in Gujarati.
It relieves Relieves Upset Stomach, Improves Metabolism, and Cure for Motion Sickness or Morning Sickness,
- Cinnamon
Cinnamon Is Loaded With Antioxidants, Has Anti-Inflammatory Properties and Lowers Blood Sugar Levels and Has a Powerful Anti-Diabetic Effect.
- Black Peppercorn
Black pepper is also High in antioxidants.
- Cardamom
Helps with Digestive Problems, treats Bad Breath and Prevent Cavities and has Antibacterial Effects and Treat Infections.
Other ingredients
- Milk (Dairy or nondairy)
- Sweetener of your choice.

You can also add
- fresh ginger instead of dry ginger powder
- cloves
- fresh turmeric
Sweetener Options –
You can use –
- Dates
For one glass, take 2 -3 deseeded dates, add it into the milk along with turmeric masala mix. Let it boil for 3 to minutes.
Now, with the help of immersion blender, blend the mixture very well, until smooth. Strain the mixture and its ready to drink.

How to make? Step by step process –
First, take all the spices in a blender and blend them into a smooth powder. Keep it aside.
Add milk to a pan on medium heat. After a minute or two (when the milk is little lukewarm) add turmeric masala mix and sugar to it.
Whisk it all together and bring to a medium simmer for 5 minutes, until it comes to a boil.
Switch off the flame.
Serve hot or warm! You may add cinnamon before serving for extra flavors.
Strain the golden milk using a strainer if you wish to.
Notes and Pro-tips
- Use your choice of sweetener.
- To make it sugar-free, skip the sweetener.
- The turmeric masala mix stays fresh up to months. Keep it into an air-tight container.
- Always use good quality turmeric and all the ingredients.
- To make it dairy-free use can use almond milk, coconut milk(NOT CANNED) or cashew milk.
- I kept the masala mix mild. If you want strong flavors of cinnamon, cardamom, black peppercorn, and dry ginger powder, increase the quantity.

Ingredients

- 1 tablespoon – Sugar
