Moth / Math Nu Shaak / Matki beans Recipe is very quick, easy and healthy. Matki / Moth is a common legume consumed in India as a main course or side dish.

These Moth beans are commonly used in Maharashtra and Gujarat. We usually make this Math Nu Shak / Moth Beans Sabzi during our Tithi days or Paryushan Days(The days when Jaina Don’t eat green vegetables).

Math Nu Shaak is dry preparation.

Moth / Matki Beans have great health benefits. Moth beans have a lot of fiber, calcium, proteins, and minerals. The best part of this recipe is you can have them any time of the day.

You can eat as a breakfast, brunch or lunch meal or even in dinner.

People make various kind of recipe using this moth beans, like a Sprouted moth, moth beans usal, missal, etc etc.

How to make Math Nu Shaak /Sabzi?

1. Soak Moth beans overnight or at least 6 hours in water.

2. Drain all the water from the soaked moth beans. Heat oil in a pan. Add soaked moth beans. Stir it once. Add salt and turmeric powder. Mix well. Add water, mix, cover it and let it cook for about 10 minutes or until moth beans are tender. Stir occasionally.

3. Once moth beans are tender, add chili powder, cumin and coriander powder and mix them well. Let it cook for another 2 minutes over medium heat. Add some water if needed.

4. Switch off the flame and squeeze lemon juice. Mix well.

5. Math Nu Shaak is ready. Garnish it with some chopped cilantro and serve it with Phulka, Rice and Gujarati Kadhi.

Ingredients

  • Moth beans / Math - 1 cup Yields 3 cup after soaking overnight
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric powder - ½ tsp
  • Red chili powder - 1 tbsp
  • Cumin and coriander powder - 1 tbsp
  • Lemon juice - 2 tbsp
  • Water - 500 to 600 ml or as required
  • Oil - 3 tbsp
  • Chopped cilantro for garnishing

    Hi. How can u make this math nu shak using the instant pot?
    I don’t own a pressure cooker.

      Hi Ramesh,
      Follow step No.1. Heat oil in an instant pot Pot. Add Moth beans, and all the spices and water, cover the ip, and cook it on pressure for 5 minutes. Hope this helps.

    Hi Dhwani,

    Thanks for this recipe!

    Your video shows Hing/Asafoetida being used at the start when you heat the oil but this is not in your list of ingredients or in your steps. Is this something that was omitted for a reason?
