It’s a fantastic way to add excitement to your event without spending too much time and effort. These treats are so impressive you won’t believe how easy they are to make!
When it comes to perfect appetizers for parties and gatherings, it’s important to consider three main criteria: They should be easy, fast, and most importantly, delicious.
Luckily, making appetizers using a puff pastry sheet quickly hits all those benchmarks.
Making puff pastry from scratch is a time-consuming process. However, using store-bought puff pastry is just as good and even more convenient. I always keep a few boxes in my freezer so we’re ready for unexpected guests, gatherings, or when you want to whip up a quick and easy appetizer.
Puff pastry is a busy host’s best friend. 🙂
Puff pastry appetizers are a great addition to any gathering, whether a party or game day. They’re easy to customize and perfect for both large and small groups.
One of the things that makes them so appealing is that they look impressive, even though they only require a little effort.
Last year, during Diwali, I shared a Samosa Puff pastry tart recipe using store-bought pastry sheets.
I’m excited to share one more fusion puff pastry appetizer recipe I’ve been loving lately – Dabeli Puff Pastry Swirls. They’re a unique and flavorful twist on Gujarati Kachhi Dabeli, and you’ll enjoy them this festive season!
Dabeli is a delicious Gujarati street food with a special place in my heart. The blend of spicy, tangy, and sweet flavors is simply irresistible.
Traditionally, dabeli is served between a bun of bread, but in this recipe, we’ll stuff the dabeli masala between layers of puff pastry sheet. After giving it a swirl pattern, we’ll bake it in the oven to achieve a crispy, golden-brown finish, resulting in a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer!
This appetizer is perfect for your party menu, especially during Diwali. Your guests are sure to enjoy them and crave more. What’s even better is that they’re super easy to make, and you can even prepare the filling and roll them ahead, making them the ideal make-ahead appetizer.
Ingredients required
Below is the ingredients list and possible substitutions. The exact ingredient amounts are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- For Dabeli filling – You will need classic dabeli filling ingredients like Potato, Dabeli masala, and oil.
- Puff pastry – The best thing to have in your freezer. This quick pastry dough creates sweet and savory dishes. Defrost and you’re ready to go! Any store-bought option in your local grocery will work, but I love Traders brand puff pastry!
- Milk – brush your puff pastry with milk, which will help your puff pastry achieve that gorgeous golden sheen.
- For the topping – You will need sweet chutney, green chutney, garlic chutney, sev, masala peanut, pomegranate, and finely chopped onion. You can use either homemade or store-bought chutney.
Step-by-step process
- To begin, thaw the puff pastry according to the package instructions. This will take 30-45 minutes. Don’t let it sit out any longer than that.
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. (200 degrees C.) and line 2 large baking trays with parchment paper.
Dabeli filling
- Heat oil in a pan. Add dabeli masala and sauté for 30 seconds. Now add ½ cup water and mix well.
- Add boiled and mashed potatoes, mix well, and cook for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring frequently. The mixture should be smooth and easy to apply. Add water and adjust the consistency if required.
- Switch off the flame and let the mixture cool down.
Make Dabeli Swirl
- Dust some flour on the working surface. Take one thawed puff pastry sheet on a working surface. Carefully open it.
- Lightly Roll thawed puff pastry out into a 9 x 12-inch rectangle.
- Spread half the dabeli filling over one-half of the pastry sheet, leaving the other half plain.
- Lift the plain pastry and fold it over on top of the dabeli masala to create a parcel.
- Again, gently roll the parcel into a rectangle, around 7×14 inches. Do the same with the remaining puff pastry sheet and dabeli masala.
- Cut the pastry into strips (as wide as you’d like) using a sharp knife or pizza cutter. I got 19 strips from one pastry. So, in total, I got 38 strips from 2 pastry sheets.
- Note – I got approximately 7 inches long and 0.7 inches wide pastry strips.
- Take one strip onto a working surface. Twist the strip, then roll it into spirals (watch the video on the recipe card for a better idea). Follow the same process for the remaining strips.
- Place on the baking tray and spread 2 inches apart.
- Brush the tops and sides of each Swirl with some milk. This will help get a gorgeous golden color to the pastry and make it extra flakey.
- Place both the trays in the oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the pastry is golden in color.
- Once fully baked, remove the tray from the oven.
- Allow to cool slightly, then serve with all three chutneys: masala shing, pomegranate, sev, and onion.
- Enjoy Dabeli Puff pastry swirls.
Storage Instructions
The best part about this Dabeli Puff Pastry Swirl is that you can make it beforehand. This works perfectly if you’re throwing a party or having guests over. After filling and rolling the pastry, wrap it in cling wrap, place it on a baking sheet, and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Cut into strips, make swirls, and bake when ready to serve.
Notes and pro tips
- You can quickly multiply the quantities to feed a crowd!
- Twist the pastry as tight as possible. Doing this will produce neat swirls.
- If the dough is too sticky, use more plain flour.
- To cut the dough into strips easily, use a pizza cutter/roller. It saves you so much time.
- Before baking, brush some milk all over the swirls. This will give them a golden brown color when baked.
Quick FAQs
Butter is used to toast the pav bread in traditional dabeli, and the flavor of butter compliments the dabeli filling well. So, I really like using an all butter puff-pastry in this recipe. I buy Puff pastry from Trader Joe’s. They have an excellent all-butter puff pastry.
You can also use pre-made pie crust Crescent dough. Or you can also serve the dabeli filling in fillo cups or on toast.
Of course! You can use your favorite brand of store-bought chutneys in this recipe!
Apart from dabeli, you can also stuff puff pastry with samosa filling or vada pavs vada filling.
