Boondi Raita

What is Raita? How do you make Raita?

Raita is Simple Indian Yogurt Sauce made with curd, some spices and different vegetables like Cucumber, Tomato, Onion, Mint, Cilantro or Boondi. Dahi Boondi Raita or any raita can be seasoned with the variety of spices such as Cumin powder, chili powder, Chaat masala or Pepper powder depending upon ones liking.

Boondi Raita

In Summer, I Often make Raitas. Boondi Raita, Mint raita, Cucumber Raita, Onion tomato raita are some of my favorite Raitas.

In South Indian Cuisine, Raita is more popularly known as Pachadi which usually call for Tadka (Tempering) of mustard seeds, Hing, dry red chilies and curry leaves. If you want to make Tadka for Raita please refer to my Cucumber raita recipe.

Boondi Raita is very Easy raita recipe and is quick to make if you have Boondi on hand. It goes well with any rice dishes like Biryani, Pulao or with any North Indian Dish too.

The key to a perfect tasting Raita is Good Quality of curd, use well-set curd.

Boondi Raita

There are 2 ways Boondi Raita Recipe is Prepared. In the First method, boondi is soaked in water just for a minute and later slightly squeezed to remove the excess water and then it is added to the whisked curd/yogurt. This step removes the oily flavor from Boondi.  Whereas In the second method, Directly add Boondi in spiced yogurt. I prefer the second method because soaking of the boondi in water gives it a bland flavor. And another reason is I love little bit crunch in my Boondi Raita.

Notes

I have used Store bought Masala Boondi. If you are using plain boondi, you may need to add salt, more chili powder, and more chaat masala. Adjust spices according to your taste.
Make Sure curd is well-set and chilled for better taste.
Dont use Greek yogurt or hung curd to make Boondi raita. Use normal, homemade, curd. Boondi absorbs excess water from curd/yogurt and makes it thick and creamy.
Add Boondi in spiced curd when you are ready to eat.
