63K Miles: 1992 Ford Mustang LX

When it comes to Fox bodies, a clean 90s Mustang is hard to ignore. So many of these cars are ragged and tired that seeing an example with some smart modifications and in otherwise exceptional cosmetic and mechanical condition makes you realize how few GTs are left that haven’t been completely trashed. This 1992 LX hatch has the preferred combination of a 5.0L V8 and a 5-speed manual, along with some Saleen-style decals on the side. Find it here on eBay for $21,995 with under 65,000 miles.

Green is a terrific color on a Fox body, and it used to be that jade or forest green was very over-done in the middle 90s. These days, we see it far less often, and I’ve come around to the point of digging any green car I see from this period. The Ford Taurus SHO comes to mind as a car that was seemingly painted in dark green more than 50 percent of the time but you simply don’t see any more; the same could be said for a clean Mustang from the early 90s. This one has been upgraded with more modern 5-spoke wheels, but I’d like to see it on a set of the aftermarket Ronals that were all the rage for a while.

The pewter interior is in excellent condition and comes with the added bonus of being covered in leather surfaces. The bucket seats show little in the way of use, and that’s not easy on a light-colored interior. The carpets are also near spotless, so it’s clear that this Mustang has been used carefully. I see no signs of aftermarket speakers wedged into the doors and the dash isn’t cracked. The seller notes this color scheme was only offered for a year and is highly sought after.

Now, it’s not a bone stock example, but the modifications it does show are pretty tame-slash-reasonable. These include a cold air intake, strut bar, a Flowmaster catback, BBK long-tube headers, short-throw shifter, and Eibach lowering springs. The Mustang LX is a classic choice for an emerging 90s collector car, and this one – despite its modifications – looks like a worthwhile investment at the seller’s asking price of $21,995.

Like Jeff says, it is good to find a clean Fox Body. Given their lower rung in the world of performance cars (that’s not a knock, they were basic cars at their core), it was common for them to get cheap, crude modifications. This one looks to have had several typical mods, but has been kept nice. I also like the dark green of this time period. Enough miles that adding a few thousand a year isn’t a concern. Lots of fun to be had here.

Very nice. I’ve always preferred the LX clean lines over the GT. Clean and not trashed to within an inch of it’s life. Lot’s to like here. GLWTS

Nice fox. Prefer bone stock, and the coupe or sedan bodystyle, but these hatches are starting to grow on me. Especially the hatchback LX in black paint w the Ford 5-star pony rims.

A nice one here. Most of the modifications could be undone in the driveway if your preference is 100 percent stock.

Leave the Flowmasters on there, though. That was the first thing everyone put on these cars anyway. And you’ve got to admit they sound great on a 5.0.

This is a beauty! The wheels are PERFECT, everything is tastefully done, and the color is great!! In my opinion, this is a steal at this price.

Odometer numbers look crooked to me, not a good sign.
I remember reading that FORD lowered the hp of the 5.0 in 92, 10 or 15 hp.
In 93 they brought it back up to 225hp.

Loving fox bodies as much as I do has me drooling over this one. I told this story on Barnfinds before, but in December 92-March 93 I was in basic/AIT/jump school at Ft Benning and saved every penny to put a deposit on a ‘93 LX hatch in this exact color that my dad ordered for me for when I got home on leave after graduating jump school. I can’t express how much I was looking forward to cruising in my new Mustang, and I couldn’t stop talking and bragging about it to all my buddies in my platoon. I’m sure they all got tired of hearing me brag about my badass Mustang. Then my dad went to pick up my Mustang and talked to our insurance agent and he said “You need to call the insurance agent and talk to her about how much it’s gonna be to get it insured” and left it at that. He left the mustang at the dealership, he couldn’t afford to pay for insurance up front, which was FIVE THOUSAND FREAKING DOLLARS a year. In 1993. For a 19 year old paratrooper with a couple speeding tickets. Needless to say, since the insurance was considerably more than the monthly payment of the car itself, I didn’t get my Mustang. Ended up getting a 1991 T-bird instead, which was a great car and a lot nicer than what I was used to driving.

Now about this mustang- I look at it and all I can think about is the ginormous aftermarket that has been supporting the fox bodies since forever. I want the engine completely built from the oil pan up for revs and boost, complete road race suspension from one of the many companies that sell entire suspension systems to make it handle, a 5 lug conversion and supporting big brake kit and then I’d leave the body and interior completely stock. Those seats are rare in leather and they’re very comfortable for cruising and twisty roads. I’d make it as much of a sleeper as a mustang can be and then drive it every single day the weather permits. And I’d NEVER SELL IT!!! One of my nephews or nieces would inherit it and I’d haunt them forever if they ever tried to sell it.
This car brought back so many memories of growing up a poor kid and dreaming of having the baddest mustang ever, I wish I was in the market because I’d buy it right now and then start the modifications immediately.

Love this car … LX is my favorite above the GT …. Cleaner lines and the dual SS exhaust is the icing on the cake …

Always liked this color as well. There’s a gal in the neighborhood with a green convertible that year, white top and interior. Sweet.

At the ripe age of 24, there was nothing hotter than a 5.0 Ford and my thrashed 280ZX, great as it was, would never be a V8. I worked for a leasing company and we had a fleet hook with Bill Currie Ford in Tampa. I placed my order for a new ‘85 5.0 GT convertible. Red over white leather, white top, 5 speed, optional axle and every option except upgrading the sound system. It took 4 months to be delivered due to being selected for emissions testing right off the line. After having some Alpine sound system components installed, I kept it stock and washed and waxed it weekly. In ‘87 I got a company car and put the immaculate 5.0 in storage. My dad bought a new Corvette convertible which I knew he’d get tired of. He promised me he’d sell it to me and on that promise I sold my beloved GT. 8 months later, dad called me to tell me he’d traded to Corvette for a new Cadillac Fleetwood d’Elegance. I was crushed and didn’t speak to my dad for a couple months. I did speak to Wayne Akers Ford however and ordered a new ‘88 GT Convertible! Dark red over white leather, white top, 5 speed, opt. Axle and radio delete. A fantastic car as well, but never quite as great as my first Fox. Something about that roller cam 5.0 with the 600 cam Holley and factory tubular manifolds that was just spectacular. The ‘88 was stolen a few years later from the front of my apartment and by then I need a affordable sedan for work so replaced it with a used Celebrity Eurosport. I’ve loved every Fox 5.0 since and would love another some day. This one is a beautiful specimen and will make someone a very happy Fox devotee.

I always thought the Fox body was an insult to the great styling of the earlier Mustangs. I still think that. They should have given this car a different name rather than degrade the real Mustangs.

Steve, thank goodness the Probe never became the new Mustang. Your brain would have exploded.

The LX is lighter than the GT model, but even with the mods it has, will still get blown of by the newer v6 and turbo 4 mustangs out there, there are a few turbo 4 mustangs on the lot where i work that would eat this thing alive!would even be generous and give 5 car lengths. That foxbody needs a couple hundred more hp….

I really don’t see the buyer of this car thinking about racing a new Mustang. It’s more a nostalgia thing.

EVERY older car purchase is made that way. You want new. go get a loan for 35K+
